Swim Groups

Swimmers will be placed in groups according to a combination of their age, ability, and experiences. There are four groups: Mini-Marlins 1, Mini-Marlins 2, Junior Marlins and Senior Marlins. Below are the descriptions for each of the groups.

Mini Marlins 1

This group is for our youngest Marlins swimmers who are just learning the fundamentals of swimming. The goal is to teach the basic and necessary components of competitive swimming in a fun environment with emphasis on proper stroke technique. With the improvements of skills there will also be an increase in endurance. Swimmers will learn not only techniques and skills in the water but also learn dryland activities to enhance their swimming skills. 

 

  • Swimmers should be able to swim 10-15m independantly with no floatation devices or person

  • Can put face in water

  • Can float on front and back

  • Feel comfortable in the deep end/

  • Know basics of freestyle (front crawl) and backstroke (Back crawl)

Junior Marlins

The Junior Marlins group focuses on the development of fundamentals of competitive swimming. Coaches will focus on technical skill development and building swimmers capacity.

Along with the technical component there will be more emphasis on aerobic and endurance fitness and learning important competitive skills. This group will be working hard but it is important that we do not overtrain them. This group is geared for swimmers between the ages of 8-12.

Junior Marlins

Junior Marlins is for swimmers who are ready to develop competitive swimming skills. Athletes will refine all four strokes, improve endurance, learn racing skills, and build the training habits needed for competitive success.

  • Swim 50 metres of freestyle (front crawl) with legal technique

  • Swim 50 metres of backstroke (back crawl) with legal technique

  • Understand the basics of breaststroke and butterfly

  • Have the endurance to swim multiple lengths continuousl

  • Able to follow coach instructions and complete structured practices

Mini Marlins 2

Mini Marlins 2 is for swimmers who have developed basic swimming skills and are ready to improve technique, endurance, and competitive swimming fundamentals. Swimmers will begin learning starts, turns, lane etiquette, and additional competitive strokes.

 

  • Ages 7-10

  • Can Swim 25m

  • Can swim in the deep end

  • Can float on front and back

  • Has established technique for fresstyle (front crawl) and backstroke (back crawl) and ready to learn additional strokes

  • Can tread water

  • Ready for instructional endurance swimming

Senior Marlins

Senior Marlins is our highest-level youth training group and is designed for swimmers committed to competitive performance. Swimmers focus on race strategy, leadership, advanced technique, sprinting, endurance, and achieving their competitive goals.Swimmers will be placed in groups based on the outlines above and also at the coach’s discretion.

  • Strong understanding of all four competitive strokes

  • Ability to complete challenging training sessions

  • Demonstrates maturity, commitment, and a strong work ethic

  • Interested in pursuing competitive swimming goals
